Goals of the School Health Services Program

"School Nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. The school nurse's primary role is to support student learning by acting as an advocate and liason between the home, the school, and the medical community regarding concerns that are likely to affect a student's
ability to learn (NASN 1999)."

Illness
We are seeing many children with flu and cold symptoms in the clinic. Prevention remains the most effective way to stay healthy. Influenza (flu) is occurring throughout Prince William County, and it is likely we will continue to see more cases during the upcoming flu season. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing by those already infected. There are several important steps that you can follow to help your child stay healthy, and to ensure that Bristow run is a healthy place to be.

  • Keep your child at home if they have a fever (100º or higher) or if they are vomiting or have diarrhea. Please keep them at home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours.
  • Encourage them to wash their hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing.
  • Teach them to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when they cough or sneeze or to use their elbow if they don’t have a tissue. Put used tissues in the waste basket.
  • Avoid close contact with others who are ill.
  • Drink clear fluids such as water, broth, sports drinks, or electrolyte beverages to prevent becoming dehydrated.

Influenza-like Illness Symptom Screening Tool
for Parents and Caregivers

Parents and caregivers should use the following questionnaire to assess the health status of their child on a daily basis.

Does your child have:
  1. Fever (100° F or greater)?                      Yes             No
  2. Sore Throat?                                         Yes             No
  3. Cough?                                                 Yes             No

Should I keep my child home?
  • If you checked yes to fever and one of the other symptoms listed, keep your child home until they are fever free for at least 24 hours without using fever reducing medication. Please call the school and tell us that your child has influenza-like-illness.

  • If your child has been seen and diagnosed by a healthcare provider – please call the school and tell us what your doctor says.
